SW269 Witham's sword, 12th-13th cent.

Description

The River Witham Sword (SR092) was dredged from the River Witham near the town of Lincoln during work carried out in 1788. The sword may be a remnant of the Battle of Lincoln in 1141; however, it was most likely constructed between 1250-1300 CE. The inscription on the blade reads +NDXOXCHMDRCHDXORVI+.

Total length 98cm, blade's length 79cm, weigth 1590g. Leather covered hilt, scabbard made of leather covered wood with iron brackets.
The steel is AISI 1566 and the HRC of the blades is approximately 52.

× These weapons are made of forged and tempered steel. They cannot be used for fencing, due to their sharp edges. Be also careful when drawing them.
