Description
This sturdy shield, made of assembled planks fastened together with transverse reinforcements, clearly displays its Nordic origins through its decoration. It depicts the world tree Yggdrasil, which supports the nine realms of Norse mythology. With a diameter of 80 cm, it was part of the standard equipment of Viking warriors. It is held by a handgrip protected by an iron boss (umbo). Its rim of rawhide, sewn onto the wood, protects it from slashing blows.
