FENCING RAPIERS

All these rapiers were made after existing ones, but were modified to be used by fencers. Made by Hanwei/Paul Chen. Please read our GUARANTEE AND IMPORTANT WARNING . You also may buy fencing blades, with an edge protection (SW399S for rapier, 50€ and SW398S for main gauche, 40€).

Swept Hilt Rapiers trace their origins to early 17th century Europe, where swordplay with the Rapier was considered an essential part of a gentleman's education and was often used in resolving gentlemanly disagreements. Blades typically originated in Toledo or Solingen and would be hilted by regional smiths, resulting in many hilt styles. The SW392 has a high-carbon steel blade and a very attractive solid steel (not plated) basket with a genuine bone grip. A rigid leather-covered scabbard is included.

The Main Gauche, or left hand dagger, was often used with the rapier, providing an added dimension in both offense and defense, and the “Schools of Fence” which proliferated in Europe during this period taught the use of the two weapons in combination. The Main Gauche would often match the Rapier in styling, while incorporating features which maximized the effectiveness of the piece. Grip also made of bone, and sold with a rigid leather-covered scabbard.

King Gustav II Adolf (1594-1632) was monarch of Sweden from 1611-1632. In 1630 as a defensive maneuver, King Gustav II entered the Thirty Years’ War to secure the Swedish state and church from danger. An excellent military tactician, Gustav led an army of unusual quality, and his position was strengthened by alliances with France, Brandenburg, and Saxony. At Lützen in 1632, the Swedes defeated Albrecht W.E. von Wallenstein's army, but King Gustav was fatally wounded in battle. The Gustav Rapier SW396 and main gauche SW397 are reproductions of his originals and are truly fit for a king. The guard of the rapier is quit impressive in design and has two shells to protect the hand. The rapier and main gauche come equipped with forged high-carbon spring steel blades and leather scabbards.

SW396N - Gustav Adolf rapier, antiqued - 210€

Based on models of 17th century swept-hilt rapiers of Germanic ancestry, our Solingen Rapier (SW388) with matching main gauche (SW389) is an excellent rendition of the timely originals. The blades are constructed of forged high-carbon steel and are equipped with leather scabbards. The guard has a beautiful design with S-curved quillons to protect the hand and for wrapping the fingers around to increase one’s grip strength.

Long extolled as the pinnacle of rapier design, the “Spanish” or “Cup-Hilt” rapier undoubtedly combined style and function very effectively in 17th century Europe. The very best of these weapons featured beautifully pierced cups and pommels. A leather-covered scabbard is included.

The matching Main Gauche again features a pierced guard and pommel in the same design as the rapier, with a fileworked blade in the Spanish style. A leather scabbard and belt frog are included.

Designed for the rapier fencer with a preference for the cup-hilt style who wishes to spar in saftey, our Practical Cup-hilt Rapier & Main Gauche fit the bill perfectly. SW408 - Stiletto - 99€

The Stiletto replicates a late 17th century piece from a private collection. Designed exclusively as a thrusting weapon, the stiletto was widespread in the period when upper-class civilian dress often incorporated mail or leather body armour. The triangular section blade is complemented by a buffalo horn grip, with the pommel and guard finials in the form of spirally carved pine cones. A silver-mounted leather-covered sheath is provided

The Main Gauche or left-hand dagger was used in conjunction with the rapier, providing an added dimension in both offense and defense. Replicating a 17th century museum piece, our Trident Main Gauche illustrates the skill and ingenuity of the bladesmiths of the period. Worn as a straight dagger, the weapon becomes a highly effective Main Gauche at the touch of a button, when the spring-loaded side pieces of the split blade fly open to become blade trappers. At the same time the offensive capability provided by the point is retained. Surprisingly, many examples of this ingenious system have survived and may be seen in European museums.GRIP: Wire Wrapped

SW362 - Side Sword or Reitschwert sword, end of the XVIth century - 199€

The Side Sword was a military sword of the 16th and 17th century renaissance period that also achieved popularity among civilians, due to its relatively light weigth and quickness. It also have an advantage over its contemporary, the rapier, in having the ability to cut efficiently as well as thrust. These were often the weapon for sword and buckler fighting. Our side sword comes from a german one, called "Reitschwert".

SW363 - Oliver Cromwell' sword, XVIIth century - 299€

Oliver Cromwell (1599 – 1658) was a powerful figure in English history during and after the English Civil War, when he rose from the rank of Captain of Horse to Lord Protector of England. His sword, said to have been carried at the battle of Drogheda in 1649, has been remarkably well preserved and features in the collection of the Royal Armouries in Leeds, England, where it is displayed in the permanent collection. Our Cromwell Sword is an accurate replica of the original “mortuary” hilt style and features a blackened guard decorated in a gold foliage pattern with a wire-wound sharkskin grip.

SW361 - English cavalry or dragoon officer sword, XVIIth century - 250€

Replicated from an original in the collection of the Royal Armouries in England, this Mortuary Hilt sword is a classical example of a cavalry or dragoon officer's sword of the 17th century english civil war period. Its names derives from the style of sword which memorialized king Charles I, the stell basket is decorated with scrolled foliage. An engreaved head of Charles I appears on the pommel. The lozenge section double edged blade is partially fullered and bears te swordmaker's mark. The leather handle wrap terminates in silver wire knots.

SW489 - Court Sword , XVIIth century - 199€

Quick and elegant describe this Court Sword. Replicating an original dating from the 1730’s and belonging to an officer in Prince Charles Edward Stuart’s army at Culloden, the finely chiseled silver-plated hilt and three-edged hollow ground blade exemplify the consummate skill of the swordsmiths of the period. Such swords were used during all the 17th and 18th centuries by officers, during social activities.

SW264 - Two handed sword, XVIth century- 330€ - Pictures - Special order only

This one is the typical two handed Lansquenet sword. If they were said to be able to shut down a cavalry charge with these, theri wearers were mostly placed at the angles of pikemen squares.

SW259 - Katsbalger, Lansquenet short sword - 299€ - Special order only - Pictures

The traditionnal picture of the Lansquenet, the XVth century hired german or swiss mercenary, shows him with a huge two handed sword. Some of them were pikemen, and had no use for such a big weapon. They used to wear a short sword, whose guard has a typical pattern, called Katsbalger.

CLAYMORES

SW364 - Claymore, 18th century - 299€ - Pictures

Although Basket-Hilt swords appeared throughout Brittan from the mid-sixteenth century on, their association with the seventeenth and eighteenth century Scottish highlander has become legendary. Early highland swords almost invariably carried the double-edged “broadsword” blade but by the time of the Battle of Culloden (1746) the single-edged “backsword” was at least equal in popularity. This Basket-Hilt Broadsword carries a typical Glasgow-style hilt from the mid-18th century. It is likely that the blade of the original sword was made in Germany a century earlier and re-hilted as basket designs were refined.

SW360 - Practical basket hilt broadsword 199€ - Pictures

This copy was built for the re-enactor. The grips are leather-covered and the blade is unsharpened, with 0.16cm (1/16”) safety edges and a rounded tip, complying with the combat rules of many re-enactment societies. Scabbards are finished in matte black, ready for owner customization if desired.
