How to make an helmet wearable ?

All our helmets are delivered without interior trimming. Making them wearable wil take you approximately 2 hours.

The method we propose consists in making first a cushion for the top of the helmet, and then a "roll" for the periphery. The cushion makes it possible to regulate fitting in height, and the roll prevents the helmet from moving when you carry it. A chin-strap end the equipment.

Gather first a natural fabric (flax, possibly cotton), stuffing (palm fibre, horsehair or possibly duffel), scissors, a sewing machine, adhesive neoprene (anachronistic but very practical, for this paste allows you to remove the trimming by tearing it off, to clean it and paste it again...),a needle and strong wire.

To carry out the bottom's cushion, cut two discs, sew them together and fill them with duffel. The diameter must correspond to the top of the helmet. Sew the periphery of the cushion in order to flatten the edges. The points will cross the cushion right through. You will obtain a convex cushion, ideally fitting to a spherical helmet.

The quantity of duffel, will depend on the depth of the helmet. Calculate it so that your eyebrows are on the level of the edge of the helmet. Test the cushion before closing it definitively, as long as you can add trimming or remove some.

For the the periphery's roll, take a long piece of fabric, fill it with duffel, close it and bend it. Make the roll a bit to thick, for they will be compressed when you put the helmet.

Cut your large roll in small sections. For a helmet one needs four of them.

Paste the helmet, and the rolls. Let dry the adhesive (time specified on the tube), stick. For the roll of the periphery, place the smallest part to the top.

If your helmet has cheekguards, stick leather inside (or a thick fabric), with possibly a little duffel in the center. For that, paste a leather piece broader than the cheekguards, paste them, fix, let dry. Cut with a sharp blade following the edge of the metal, holding your blade at an 45° angle so as to form a bevel.

It is finished!
